Former Cloudeater drummer unveils new Holoking project with ‘Superhuman’
The group makes its live debut Thurs., Jan. 23, at 529 as part of the monthly Left Field Experiment.
Holoking is a new project that finds former Cloudeater drummer Chris Hunt and Chicago-based MC Diverse (Kenny Jenkins) pairing up for a dose of abstract hip-hop that’s cut from equal parts big industrial beats and serpentine lyrical sprints.
Today, “Superhuman” offers up the first glimpse at what Hunt and Diverse have up their sleeve with a 10-song EP that’s currently in the works. Throughout this first number, waves of distortion wrap around the song’s rhythms and melodies, giving rise to a tumbling and abrasive, but always intriguing flow. The track also features the voice of up-and-coming Chicago vocalist Chris James, adding a touch of ambient vocal texture behind Diverse’s rapping. Check out James’ recent collab with Pusha T, “Love Hates Me,” for more of his experimental R&B style.
