Former Cloudeater drummer unveils new Holoking project with ‘Superhuman’

The group makes its live debut Thurs., Jan. 23, at 529 as part of the monthly Left Field Experiment.

Image Holoking is a new project that finds former Cloudeater drummer Chris Hunt and Chicago-based MC Diverse (Kenny Jenkins) pairing up for a dose of abstract hip-hop that’s cut from equal parts big industrial beats and serpentine lyrical sprints.

Today, “Superhuman” offers up the first glimpse at what Hunt and Diverse have up their sleeve with a 10-song EP that’s currently in the works. Throughout this first number, waves of distortion wrap around the song’s rhythms and melodies, giving rise to a tumbling and abrasive, but always intriguing flow. The track also features the voice of up-and-coming Chicago vocalist Chris James, adding a touch of ambient vocal texture behind Diverse’s rapping. Check out James’ recent collab with Pusha T, “Love Hates Me,” for more of his experimental R&B style.

Holoking makes its live debut on Thurs., Jan. 23 at 529 when Diverse and Hunt take the stage alongside Kevin Scott (bass) and fellow Cloudeater alum Nolan Kramer (electronics/synths), as part of the monthly Left Field Experiment with Ras G, the Difference Machine, and Heavy Color.
