Today, NPR has your first listen to Shabazz Palaces next album, Lese Majesty (out Tues., July 29 via Sub Pop), streaming in full. Ishmael Butler returns with the same dark and lumbering abstract hip-hop beats that defined 2011’s Black Up. Butler, however, seems to have shed a bit of the brooding edge in favor of a more refined and melodic take on the sound and seemingly automatic writing style he has fleshed out over the last few years.

The timing of NPR’s preview couldn’t be better, as today we’re also announcing that Shabazz Palaces will be the featured artist for Red Bull Sound Select’s Psych Army-curated showcase at the Basement on Aug. 28. Al Lover, the Difference Machine, and deadCAT are slated to perform as well, with DJ sets by the Morkestra, and visual by J. Smiley.

Last spring, Red Bull, CL, and a handful of Atlanta promoters joined forces to shine a light on local music through a series of live shows, and by connecting bands with their audiences via the Sound Select social media aggregator. All of the proceeds from ticket sales and what’s made at the door go directly to the local acts, while Red Bull covers the headlining acts to bring more exposure for the locals.

No pre sales this time around. Tickets are $3 if you RSVP via Red Bull Sound Select, or $10 at the door (if any are left). The Basement. 1245 Glenwood Ave. 404-622-8686. www.basementatl.com.
