BØATING and Paige Adair take a bit of Shore Leave at the Big House

Sound buoys, synthetic tide pools (with real water), hush puppies, and more are all a part of the Ponce beach experience.

Anchors aweigh! BØATING, the psychonautical quartet helmed by David Matysiak, Devin Brown, Mason Brown, and Jordan Noel, is departing this Sat., Aug. 2, for the Big House to lend a score for a slew of aquatic-themed installations and animations conceived by local multimedia artist Paige Adair. Christened “Shore Leave: A Protean Revel,” the event creates a bizarro version of life on the beach, complete with hush puppies, palm readings, “synthetic tide pools (with real water),” and boardwalk fare. Or, to put it simply, what it might be like if Ponce had a beach. The psych-surf-and-turf experiment is wholly Matysiak, who is no stranger to diving headfirst into the deep end of comedy-meets-sound experimentation (see the recent comedy-themed episode of Matysiak’s ROAM Transmissions series). Adair, who will be handling the visuals for the night, speaks to darker qualities of the sea, referencing Larry Jordan’s sublimely experimental animation style, calling out 1977’s Orson Welles-narrated “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” as a direct inspiration for the night. “I have been collecting footage of the sea, boats, and pools to tie in with sea monster/mermaid ephemera,” Adair says. “I hope no one gets seasick!”

The event is also BYOB (bring your own beachwear), so plan ahead and come prepared. In the meantime, check out this interview Shore Leave-affiliate Cap’n Stan Beastin participated in to shed a few more details on the event.
