Two local bands are gearing up to release debut albums, joining the roster of Decatur-based indie label Bear Kids Recordings.

Folk pop group Cute Boots and Small Reactions will both release full-length debuts on Bear Kids — on the same day, of course.

Cute Boots' A Fresh Start in the Same Old Town and Small Reactions' Similar Phantoms will drop on Oct. 28 digitally (distributed through Frenchkiss Label Group) and on limited edition cassettes. The albums will be pressed onto 100 cassettes each and are available for pre-ordering.

After two EPs, Cute Boots' piano-infused pop melodies have been honed into an uplifting album. A Fresh Start in the Same Old Town is "about keeping your head up when you think you've seen it all," songwriter Gus Fernandez says. "We're trying to find ways to keep it fresh and interesting."

Small Reactions has been making music for years, most recently releasing the Hung From Wire EP in July. As a much-anticipated first LP, Similar Phantoms promises dark, heady themes wrapped in pop music. Small Reactions is also releasing vinyl and CD versions of the album outside of Bear Kids, but the group also chose a cassette release specifically. "Cassettes are a bit of a "dated" medium, but what I do like about them is that you have to invest with an album when you listen on cassette — you can't easily skip track to track and the music on each side is a continuous stream of sound," drummer Sean Zearfoss says.

Bear Kids Recordings started in 2010, and owner and operator Justin Green made the transition to focus on cassettes last year as a way to keep music affordable. Both A Fresh Start in the Same Old Town and Similar Phantoms are $7 on the pre-order site.
