Iommi-inspired riffs and math rock grooves surf their way through Creation Myths’ debut

Roughly two months ago and following a handful of low-key shows around the city, Moonbase self-released its debut album via Bandcamp. Titled Creation Myths, the album highlights the prog-surf quartet’s veritable “super group” lineup, featuring guitarist George Asimakos (ex-Knaves Grave, Blame Game, Chopper, and Milk), drummer Sonny Harding (Ian Campbell and the Recruits), bass player Eric Balint (Book of Colors, Jeffrey Bützer and the Bicycle Eaters), and guitarist Chad Shivers (Mystery Men, Jeffrey Bützer and the Bicycle Eaters). Each of Moonbase’s members brings a disparate but inextricably linked approach to math-inspired surf rock, with overdriven tones, agile melodies, and calculated shifts in rhythm and meter. “Smoke” and “Stormfield” play out like sunbaked party anthems that worship at the altar of Tony Iommi rather than the Wilson brothers. Elsewhere, tracks such as “New Wounds” and “Caves of Steel” highlight the virtuosic guitar lines noodled out by both Asimakos and Shivers. Stream the entire album below, and mark your calendar for Moonbase’s free set at Criminal Records this Sat., Nov. 22.
