Over the past couple of weeks, I've heard a handful of people say that 2012 was a bad year for music. I couldn't disagree more. While I've only named a handful of albums below for this particular best of list, the past 12 months have seen a resurgence in both noise and R&B, and on the whole have offered an abundance of excellent releases across a wide variety of styles.
For brevity's sake, I will only name a few of my favorite 2012 records. My love for these has grown in different ways throughout the year. In some cases - such as Jens Lekman, Father John Misty, El-P - talking with these musicians about their creative process allowed me to appreciate albums more than I would've otherwise. Some old favorites putting out new LPs, while others came seemingly out of nowhere.
So with that in mind, here are my 10 favorite records as well as five local releases that I particularly enjoyed in 2012.
Favorite Albums of 2012
Honorable Mentions: Lambchop - Mr. M, Sharon Van Etten - Tramp, Chromatics - Kill For Love, Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light, Cat Power - Sun.
10. Tame Impala - Lonerism
9. Titus Andronicus - Local Business
Last year, when I served up my list of top soul albums of 2011, I started things off by saying it had been a great one for soul music. Well, turns out that the great sounds kept on rolling into 2012. Take a look at my picks for this year's best:
Clementine Sun, Khari Cabral: If you picked up the 2012 edition of CL's "Best of Atlanta" issue, you may know that Clementine Sun already garnered the "Best Soul Album" of the year award - so it shouldn't be a surprise that it's found a place on this list. Khari Cabral's (aka Khari Simmons) first solo offering, Clementine Sun boasts the bassist's trademarked blend of Brazilian and soul sounds, and features near-flawless vocal appearances by singers like Chantae Cann, India. Arie, Monday Michiro, and more.
You've got a few of my faves listed here, plus a bunch I've never heard…
