Traveling exhibitions — such as Louvre Atlanta, or the ongoing (though nearly concluded) museological battle between King Tut and China's first emperor — are typically reserved for Atlanta's larger, higher profile institutions. While there's such a thing as a nationally calibrated indie arts tour, rarely does one ever originate here.

Art House Co-op breaks the mold with its Sketchbook Project Tour, a collection of mixed-media Molskine journals by more than 2,000 international artists. Although Art House has orchestrated sketchbook shows in the past (the current iteration is dubbed "Volume 3"), it's taking this one on the road, likening the project to "a concert tour, but with sketchbooks." After visiting cities such as Philadelphia, St. Louis, Brooklyn, and Washington, D.C., the show returns for an opening at the Museum of Design Atlanta this Thurs., April 2 at 7 p.m.

Art House's newly relaunched website, optimized for creative "crowdsourcing," features extensive previews of sketchbooks and other collaborative projects. More from Art House:

The Sketchbook Project includes 2,785 participants from the U.S. as well as 44 other countries. 135 of the participating artists are from Georgia.

Each participant was given a 3 ½ in. x 5 ½ in. Moleskine® sketchbook and the theme “everyone we know.” The visual interpretation of that theme, as well as visual style and media was left up to the individual artist.

The Sketchbook Project was open to all applicants on a first come first serve basis at Art House Co-op’s website, www.arthousecoop.com, where artists can create profiles, share portfolio images, and interact with each other, essentially forming a social networking site, as well as a collective of artists from various nationalities, ideologies, styles, and artistic backgrounds.

Sketchbook Project Volume 3 will remain on view until April 15.

Art House has to be the best gallery that i've been to not only in Atlanta, but EVER! I love that they're about bringing together a vast group of people to form it's own community. I can't wait to see the Sketchbook Project exhibited at the MODA, it's sure to be great!
