If we're to judge based on the adorable horrible scene depicted in Dripping Cat Shredder … we might conclude that the title of Joe Tsambiras' upcoming solo exhibit at Eyedrum, Golden Feelings, is merely a stab of irony. Poor kitty …

Then again, Tsambiras has a track record to consider. Last year, his Majestic Hours collaboration with Sam Parker totaled some 100 boldly executed drawings, a number he achieved all on his lonesome in a separate, solo show at L5P Aurora Coffee. What's more, he's a drawing professor at the University of West Georgia, noted for his draftsmanship and for his (true) love of the subject. So, maybe he's not joking? Maybe these drawings are the product of the the artist's fuzzy, "golden" heartbeats for his favorite medium?

Then again (again), I revisited my notes from our "studio visit" interview last year, recounting his down-to-earth explanations and candid art-world appraisals. Tsambiras said that it's always strange hear critics observe "new shifts" in an artist's career. For him, drawing is a means of exploring a set of basic, lifelong themes that may evolve, superficially, but in truth simply repeat in loose variations, revisits, and refinements. (Tsambiras' latest "twist" appears to be gold embellishments on each drawing.)

So, as a way of taking good advice (from an artist to his would-be critic), I'll take this opportunity to suspend my speculations on his motives and shut my trap — AND go see the art. The opening reception is this Sat. May 2, from 6-8 p.m. in Eyedrum's Small Gallery, where the show will remain on view until June 6.

Oh, and FYI: The show flier promises "pies and cupcakes!"
