All Gold Everything drops at Studioplex tonight

If pancakes and booze too closely resembles the recipe for the perfect storm of hangovers, and Jesus kitsch gives you the eye-rolls in a bad way, perhaps Atlanta's art scene can offer you a heaping portion of club culture sarcasm for your Friday night. All Gold Everything opens tonight at Studioplex. And if aren't paying close attention, you could easily mistake The Art Official's (a local art team composed of Matt Sigmon and Antonio Darden) flier for the show as your run-of-the-mill club flier, complete with latex-laden titties, a dreamy shot of the Atlanta skyline, bombastic language, and copious amounts of gold.

The duo's use of over-the-top terminology - calling the event a "launch party" instead of an "exhibition" or "opening", and proclaiming their "place in history" with this "once-in-a-life-time" happening - evokes a gaudy, almost ignorant, sensationalism that is usually reserved for Atlanta's flashy hip-hop club scene. (And actually, these guys apparently like to get cheeky about everything - last year they played into Le Flash fever by changing their name and logo.)

Not that I'm calling ATL's hip-hoppers ignorant. Or if I am, it's in the most endearing way possible. There's this admirable, seemingly ceaseless ambition and faith among up-and-coming (that's what they would want to be called) rappers that what they are doing is the thing; they are going to live the dream, change the game, and be the biggest, best thing to ever happen to music. And whether or not that idealism pans out (I think we know the typical answer to that), you have to wonder, why the hell shouldn't an emerging artist lean into their budding career with such energy and faith? The Art Officials are taking on that same spirit with their May 7 show. There seems to be as much earnest appropriation of ambitious ideals as there is sarcastic commentary, even if it is a little accidental.

All Gold Everything opens at Studioplex on Friday, May 7. 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. 659 Auburn Avenue N.E. Suite 143.
