HBO profiles Rio in final installment of documentary series 'Witness'

Posted By on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Watching the news or reading a magazine, it's easy to forget about the person behind the camera - that critical eye that pulls you emotionally into the story or conflict being reported. Hundreds of photojournalist put themselves in harm's way to expand the story beyond the typed or read word. During the month of November, HBO shares the photographer's story in a four-part docu-series titled Witness.

"The amazing thing is we don't know many of them," explains Witness director and executive producer, David Frankham to an audience at the premiere of South Sudan at the Bronze Lens Film Festival earlier this month. "They have affected the way we see the world, how we think about conflicts all over and we don't know many by name."

I'm still at a loss for words regarding the tragic events that occurred in Aurora Colo. - Its senseless and hard to grasp that magnitude of evil where 12 die, 59 wounded in an unprovoked theater massacre.

While I don't know what to say about the matter, apparently Georgia's own superhero, Captain Black does. Captain Black is a member of the Real Life Superhero (RLSH) community or "Reals" as they're often referred - often costumed civilians noted for doing neighborhood watches or community service work in the spirit of the comic book ethos that inspired them. "Cap" as he's known in his city of operations Savannah posted a rally cry for heroes to rise up and answer to call.

Members of what media calls ” the real life superhero ( RLSH ) ” now have a golden opportunity to put aside petty squabbles in the face of a masked assault embodying the worst villainy of fact and fiction. Their use of superhero imagery can assume new seriousness in wake of this tragedy.

Los Aliens - 'The Battle of Los Angeles' 76th anniversary

Earlier this week, after reading a press release about the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Los Angeles, I thought it was a hoax. A clever made-up PR campaign to peddle Columbia Picture's new alien invasion film, Battle: Los Angeles. I'm no historian, but I know enough about World War II and its battles - and Los Angeles was never a topic discussed in that vein anyway. Well imagine my surprise to find out that its true - there was a Battle of Los Angeles that took place on this day. But let's set the record straight - there was no real skirmish over the City of Angels.

According to Wikipedia, the Navy let loose a barrage at what they thought was another Japanese attack force but the object(s) they fired upon were never determined. The assault created a panic in the city as the media tried to capture another potential attack on U.S. soil. Later the Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox declared it a false alarm and bad case of "war nerves." After all, this was a mere two months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After further investigation from the Air Force, they declared it was probably an errant weather balloon.
