Scott Holcomb can't help but smile. He and his wife Kathleen will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary this weekend. And later this summer, the couple will welcome their first child into the world -- a boy.
But here's the rub: Holcomb is running for secretary of state and the Democratic primary election is July 18. Kathleen is due to deliver that same day.
Holcomb says he tried to do most of his traveling early on in his campaign, so that in the weeks leading up to the primary and his son's birth he can spend most of his time near home. He says so far he has managed to attend all of his wife's doctor appointments.
But conflicts are inevitable.
"We just learned that they are holding a televised debate for secretary of state candidates on July 16 and obviously I want to be there," Holcomb says. "But if my wife is in labor then I might not be able to make it."
That's not the only debate Holcomb is hoping to win. He and Kathleen are currently trying to decide on a name for their baby.
"We both like the name Carter," Holcomb says. "I like Elvis, but no way she'll give that to me. She said maybe Presley. Maybe."
