Republicans Casey Cagle and Ralph Reed declined our invitation to join in a debate/endorsement interview of candidates for lieutenant governor. But all the Democrats and one Libertarian trekked down to CL Central on June 8.

Leading the way in the Democratic primary are Greg Hecht, a former state senator, Jim Martin, the former commissioner for the state Department of Human Resources and Steen Miles, a former journalist and freshman state senator. Two less-known Democrats -- businessman Griffin Lotson and restaurant owner Rufus Terrill, as well as Libertarian Allen Buckley -- joined the festivities.

Listen between the lines and you can tell who the three favorites are: Martin, Hecht and Miles (all of whom have served in the Legislature). They took slaps at each other. And in an answer to a question regarding the gay marriage amendment brouhaha, all three were careful to agree that marriage is a union between a man and a woman (a safer response than being pro-gay marriage when you consider how conservative Georgia voters are on the issue).
