Col. Bruce Hampton Zambies the Grammys

Posted by Scott Freeman on Tue, Feb 13, 2007 at 9:55 PM

Col. Bruce Hampton had the perfect Zambi moment on Grammy night.

There was a portion of the show where they paid tribute to musical figures who had passed away in the past year by briefly showing their photograph. There was James Brown, Ahmet Ertegun and several others, including Capricorn Records founding father Phil Walden.

Except, instead of showing a photograph of Walden, they showed one of Col. Bruce. My phone started ringing off the hook, the Colonel exclaimed. People were calling from everywhere, I even got a call from France.

Col. Bruce didn't see the show, and neither did I. But he was told the photo came from a group shot taken in the early 70s that included the Colonel on one end and Walden on the other. Obviously, someone said Walden was far left in the photograph when they meant far right.

The shot is on the Colonels website under the History section.
