May TV Sweeps began last week, so the TV series that observe the traditional fall-through-spring TV season are winding down (and some, like "Battlestar Galactica" and my favorite new one, "30 Rock," have already finished up).
Acknowledging that there's still time for shows to improve a flagging year or ruin a good one, this week's question is: Which TV series had the best 2007-2008 season? My choice is "The Office," which, through welcome cast additions such as Ed Helms, continues to be a brilliant comedy that (as far as I'm concerned) improves on the already exceptional British version.
Speaking of Sweeps Month, "My Name is Earl," "The Office's" partner in NBC's 8-9 p.m. Thursday time slot, presents the season's most audacious gimmick. Borrowing the "Odorama" concept from John Waters' film Polyester, "My Name Is Earl" offers a "Laugh 'n' Sniff" episode: special "scent cards" (available in last week's TV Guide â I haven't checked if this week's has them) contain six scratch-and-sniff odors to be used during key moments of the show. The cards are sponsored by Oreo, so I'm 99% sure that Oreo cookies will be one of the scents. As a sucker for any gimmick, I picked up my card last week, and I'll be sure to report on Friday about how well it worked.
