News Big week for politics

Call it an alignment of the ill-starred. Both the state Democratic and Republican parties will be throwing their biggest bashes of the year -- just one day and a few miles apart.
On Thursday, the Dems will hold their annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner at the Georgia World Congress Center, with former North Carolina senator and current presidential candidate John Edwards as keynote speaker.
The premiere party fundraiser, the J-J Dinner is usually held in March when lawmakers are in town for the General Assembly. Last year, however, the Republican leadership scheduled Crossover Day -- a bill-passing frenzy that typically lasts well into the evening -- for the very same night as the dinner, meaning no legislators could attend. Quelle coincidence! This time around, Democrats were careful not to make the same mistake.
Even with Edwards lending some encouragement, the state party is still in a go-nowhere topor, so the J-J Dinner will likely offer little more than a brief chance to forget its woes.
Friday sees the kick-off of the state GOP convention at the Gwinnett Civic Center in Duluth. Doors open at midday, but the real action begins with a dinner featuring ex-House Speaker and potential presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich. The convention resumes Saturday morning, but the fun for onlookers will be watching the tension between Gov. Sonny Perdue and state House leaders. With the party caught up in petty feuds, fireworks could be in order.
