YouTube clip of the day

Posted by Scott Freeman on Wed, May 23, 2007 at 3:27 PM

In honor of Baton Bob, who will grace the cover of our Summer Guide issue that comes out tonight, we offer this fascinating mini-documentary on the man who has devoted his life to giving us all a better day. Meet the man behind the tiara:

I had the pleasure of actually sitting down and having a drink with Baton Bob a little over a year ago. He told me his story and I shared with him that when I worked in Midtown it always made my day when I heard his whistle coming up the sidewalk. I dare anyone to say they are having a bad day after meeting him.

This is true - every time I've seen him, I can't help but smile.

Bob always brightened the day of barber Eli Sotto, a Holocaust survivor: http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=92829 "Today, he was a ballerina," says Sotto, who speaks with a thick Greek accent. "Yesterday, he was a bride. Oh, my goodness. I wish I could have a camera. I don't know where he gets his costumes. He's a big muscle guy. Sometimes he's a cheerleader. Sometimes he blows a whistle. Every day, something different."

Like JFK or 9/11, but in a good way, everyone remembers where they were when they first saw Baton Bob. I had returned from a November vacation and walked out of my loft onto Peachtree Street. Across the street was a man in a tutu and white cavalier boots twirling a baton while marching to the beat of his very own personal drumline. I told my friends in other parts fo the country and they either didn't believe or thought it weird. In December, he changed to a Santa coat and hat. i felt great after seeing him. Keep it up, Baton Bob, your succeeding on your mission.
