William: Atlanta is mostly focused on folk art over fine art. Art festivals here are also musical festivals. Music attracts people who aren’t interested in art. I go to Dallas to do shows. In Dallas you see higher-end $40,000, $20,000 sculptures. In Atlanta, even at the Dogwood, the best show in Atlanta, you see sculptures dominated by pieces under $150.

Margaret: My art seems to be accepted better out of state. If I was Margaret from Liberia or Margaret from Ghana, they would want my art. But I’m Margaret from Atlanta, an African-American, female woman so people don’t place as much value on my art. There is a segment of people who buy art in Atlanta, but they have to wait for people to tell them that Artist X is good.

Chris: Atlanta is my best market. The imagery I paint caters to a younger market with alcohol-related imagery. There happens to be a beer tent right across from my booth. I don’t sell well in South Florida. They’re not going to hang an image with a martini on their wall. I stay away from festivals that have food in the title. If it’s the Corn Boil or Peanut Festival, it’s not going to happen.
