Ditch your car — for a day

Posted by Mara Shalhoup on Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 8:54 PM

If, like the vast majority of metro Atlantans, you're not yet at the point where you're cool with giving up your car, you might try easing into it.

There are two days left in the Clean Air Campaign's "Give Your Car the Day Off" drive (no pun intended). Consider it a training bra for your eventual move toward relying on public transit. Of course, with the Beltline transit system still many moons from completion — let alone ground-breaking — ditching your car now might be but a mere taste of a car-free future.

Until Atlanta has a public transit line that actually meets the majority's need, there are other ways to help reduce the toxic gases that come from cars. The alternatives include biking, carpooling, teleworking and joblessness.

If you want to learn more about improving your commute (and you don't have a day job), check out the commuter fair that will be held tomorrow, June 21, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. If you go, make sure you ride MARTA. The belabored system actually can get you there.
