Question of the Week: Beach books

Posted by Curt Holman on Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 4:45 PM

There’s probably less than a month remaining of traditional “summer vacation” time. If you took a good beach trip this year, or have one planned, Question of the Week wants to know: What is a good “beach book”? Personally, I'd like something that builds up a lot of narrative momentum but is more literary than, say, your average Star Wars novelization or Left Behind installment.

For some reason, when I go on vacation I seem to gravitate to historical novels, perhaps because the good ones are both page-turners and sources of fun facts to share with family and friends. Entertaining ones I’ve read recently include Imperium by Robert Harris (early triumphs in the career of Cicero; more exciting than it sounds); The Afghan Campaign by Stephen Pressfield (Alexander the Great’s Afghan War from the point of view of the common soldiers; any similarity to current geopolitics is purely intentional); and The Terror by Dan Simmons (true adventure of two 19th-century ships frozen in the Arctic given a horror element with the inclusion of a monster).

I’ll read practically anything, though; any suggestions?

Speaking of vacations, enjoy this special Bonus Question on what to eat on beach trips.

I would reccommend anything by Chuck Klosterman. However my personal favorite of his is Sex, Drugs, and Coco Coco Puffs. My favorite pop culture cynic. It is a relaxing and a great beach read yet informative (in a strange way) and humorous.
