Question of the Week: Television Seizin'

Posted by Curt Holman on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 9:08 PM

Although September is no longer as meaningful as the launch of the new fall TV season as it used to be (assuming that TV ever qualifies as “meaningful”), the new season and new shows are upon us. So, Are you interested in any new TV shows? What show will you be happiest to see return?

Of the new ones, I’ll probably check out “The Bionic Woman.” Entertainment Weekly named it as a “pick” and made it sound like an interesting “re-imagining.” Plus, Starbuck from “Battlestar Galactica” is on the first episode, apparently. It’ll be on at 9 p.m. Wednesdays on NBC, starting Sept. 26. I’ve also heard good things about “Pushing Daisies” (8 p.m. Wednesdays on ABC, starting Oct. 3), created by Bryan Fuller. I’m also curious about the post-Katrina New Orleans cop show “K-Ville” (9 p.m. Tuesdays on Fox, starting Sept. 17). I’m more skeptical about “Cavemen” (8 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC, starting Oct. 2), but I heard it takes place in Atlanta, so, you know.

Of the returning shows, my favorite is “The Office” (9 p.m. Thursdays on NBC, starting Sept. 27), which returns with four one-hour episodes in a row. I also heard a weird rumor that there will be 30 episodes this season (instead of the customary 22 or so), and I hope they don’t overdo it. The second and third seasons have both been great — I’d hate it if the fourth one flagged because of overwork/flooding the marketplace. I’m definitely a fan of “30 Rock” (Oct. 4) and will probably stick with “My Name Is Earl” (Sept. 27), which are both Thursdays on NBC. I can’t say I have much stake in “The Simpsons,” but it comes back Sept. 23, and supposedly Spider-pig will be appearing at some point.

The funny – and unexpectedly convenient – thing is that none of the dramas I watch will be back until next year. “Battlestar Galactica,” “Lost” and “24” are all scheduled to come back in early 2008 (“Lost” I believe in February), although the “Battlestar Galactica” two-hour movie, Razor, (about the Pegasus) will air Nov. 24, last I heard. I don’t watch “Heroes,” returning Sept. 24, but would love to get my hands on the Season 1 DVD. Anyway, having the hourlongs return in 2008 is handy because in November-December I’ll be playing catch-up with movies from 2007, so it’ll be nice to have less competition for my sittin’-around-watching-stuff time.
