Question of the Week: The South on the screen

Posted by Curt Holman on Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 6:10 PM

In this week’s issue I have a podcast interview and a movie review of Randy and the Mob. My podcast conversation is with Ray McKinnon, a filmmaker/character actor (“Deadwood,” O Brother, Where Art Thou and more), and Walton Goggins (best known as a regular on “The Shield”). McKinnon wrote and directed Randy and the Mob and plays twin brothers, while Walton produced the film and plays one of the lead characters. They’re both Georgia natives (living in Los Angeles), and I’ve been following their work ever since they won the Oscar for McKinnon’s 38-minute short film “The Accountant” in 2002.

“The Accountant” plays like a laugh-out-loud-funny Flannery O’Connor short story and is probably my favorite film set in the South (I believe you can still order it here). Since not everyone has seen it, that inspires my question: What is your favorite film or television portrayal of the South? Driving Miss Daisy? Gone with the Wind? Deliverance? “I’ll Fly Away”? “Carter Country”? There are many possibilities.

I'd have to say Fried Green Tomatoes. Maybe it's just my favorite because my grandmother used to fast-forward through all the "bad" parts. I didn't find out until later that she considered half of the movie "bad." Either way, it's still a great Southern movie.
