Gorilla jealousy?

Posted by Scott Freeman on Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 10:30 PM

On Oct. 31, CL published a cover story on Gorilla Haven, the private facility in Blue Ridge that houses gorillas that don't fit in at the zoos that own them.

There are currently two gorillas housed at Gorilla Haven: Oliver, a 19-year-old male, and our cover boy Joe, a 44-year-old male.

Jane Dewar, who owns Gorilla Haven along with her husband, Steuart, reports that some tension has developed between the two — gorilla jealousy of sorts. It turns out Oliver was not happy that Joe, not him, was selected to be on the cover.

"Oliver took one look at the cover of the last issue of CL and asked why HE wasn't the cover boy, instead of Joe (see his face!)," Dewar says in an e-mail. "But when I opened the newspaper and showed him his portrait, he was quite pleased ... so much so, he proceeded to eat the newspaper."

We can, er, only hope that the ink used to print CL is soy-based.

In all seriousness, the Dewars built Gorilla Haven with their own money. They have just posted an announcement on their website that they now need to raise funds to help keep their nonprofit facility in operation. For information, click here.
