Education weak

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 10:30 PM

Education Week, a trade publication for teachers, released a report card today for Georgia's public schools.

The Peach State scored a "B -" overall, even though it only earned a lousy "D +" in the possibly somewhat sorta important "K-12 Achievement" category.

Georgia's report card average was boosted by an "A -" in a category called "Standards, assessments, and accountability."

The "B -" is like giving a restaurant three stars for serving lousy food and knowing it.

Excuse me, did you even look at the report? After reading your post, I went and found it and guess what...there were a ton of states BELOW Georgia in K-12 Achievement. States like North Carolina and Connecticut. And things like Standards, Assessments and Accountability are silly old things like the curriculum that is taught....but that's not important, huh? Education Weak? Maybe. Journalism Weak? No question.

So, a D- is ok in your book so long as there are "a ton" of other states that do worse? The problem with that logic is that I am not planning on sending my kids to schools in a ton of other states, but right here in Georgia, and that's a problem.

K-12 achievement is the overall mission of public schools. Standards, assessments and accountability are means to that end. Both are important. The former is clearly more important than the latter. Other states do indeed score worse than Georgia, but why is that supposed to make anyone feel better?
