Cooter: 'Obama beats all I ever saw'

Posted By on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Former Rep. Ben Jones, aka Cooter from "The Dukes of Hazzard," today endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president.

Said Jones in a press release:

As a lifelong Southerner, I am much impressed by his sincerity, his down to earth style, and his earnest approach to people of all backgrounds.

Obama could not be reached for a statement, but this afternoon his campaign bus successfully jumped a ravine, after which the junior senator from Illinois leaned out a window and fired arrows of dynamite at rival Sen. Hillary Clinton's bus. Clinton was not injured, but according to a spokesman, the former First Lady "felt snubbed."

The press release announcing Cooter's endorsement is after the jump. Yee-haw!

Former Rep. Ben “Cooter” Jones Endorses Barack Obama for President

January 31, 2008

ATLANTA , GA – The Obama for America campaign welcomes the endorsement of former Congressman Ben “Cooter” Jones who served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia ’s Fourth District. Mr. Jones had previously supported Senator John Edwards’ campaign, but has chosen to endorse Barack Obama because of his message of change and hope, and his ability to bring people together across party lines.

Rep. Jones was made famous for his role as “Cooter” on the hit television show, The Dukes of Hazzard.

"I am delighted to be a part of Barack Obama's historic campaign for the Presidency. As a lifelong Southerner, I am much impressed by his sincerity, his down to earth style, and his earnest approach to people of all backgrounds. As a former supporter of John Edwards, I have no doubt that he shares our priorities of economic fairness and social justice. And as an Edwards supporter, I was able to see first-hand Senator Obama's formidable intellect, his rare integrity, and the honorable way in which has conducted himself and his campaign,” stated Jones.

In the past, I have worked tirelessly for the Democratic campaigns of John Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. To me, Senator Obama has JFK's intellectual vigor and inspiring vision, the common touch of Jimmy Carter, and the policy grasp of Bill Clinton

rolled into one. Only Barack Obama has the ability and the good judgment to re-unite our nation and to make the Democratic Party truly a national party once again,” Jones added.

“I am honored to have the Congressman’s support because we share the same vision of hope and change for our country,” stated Barack Obama. “We have many challenges to face together as a nation, and I know that Ben’s previous support of Senator Edwards is a reflection of our mutual desire for our country to move forward in a new direction.”

Ben Jones served two terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1989 through 1993 representing the 4th District of Georgia.

Like Edwards, Obama refused donations from PACs and Washington lobbyists and vowed to stand up to the special interests that have blocked so much progress for working Americans in Washington , DC . Other former Edwards supporters said they were voting for Obama because he’s the only candidate in the race who has the ability to unite America around a common vision for the future and win the votes of Republicans and Independents whose support is critical to winning the general election.

In coming days, the Obama for America campaign in Atlanta will release a list of other supporters in the State of Georgia who have joined Barack Obama’s campaign for change.
