HR-WTF

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 10:15 PM

WHEREAS whining like a spoiled little baby for a college football team is what passes for leadership at the Capitol, the Georgia House of Representatives passed a resolution today urging the NCAA to adopt a playoff system for college football.

Here's HR-1034 in its shameful entirety:

A RESOLUTION

Urging the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to implement a playoff system to determine a national champion in the sport of football; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the 2007 college football season was one of the most memorable of all times and involved outstanding plays, players, and thrilling games; and

WHEREAS, one of the goals of every football team going into a new season is to eventually be crowned the national champion and earn the admiration and respect of the whole country; and

WHEREAS, the greatest disappointment of the 2007 college football season was the dysfunctional system, known as the Bowl Championship Series or BCS, the NCAA has implemented in order to determine a national champion; and

WHEREAS, the teams chosen to play in the various BCS bowl games are selected through mathematical computations, politics, and corporate and television influences that rarely relate to determining the best football team on the field; and

WHEREAS, the only sensible way to determine a national champion in any sport is to develop a playoff system that allows teams to meet on the field; and

WHEREAS, the fans of college football deserve a true national champion to be crowned after winning the title on the field of play and not in a popularity poll.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body strongly urge the NCAA to adopt a playoff system to determine the national champion in college football.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

I can't decide if this is worse than the rain prayer service. In any case, it makes me want to cry. And not for my beloved Bulldogs. We didn't deserve sh*t after losing that South Carolina game early on. Btw, ask Scott Henry or Mr. Wheatley to spend a little more time writing about what Mr. Speaker did to the folks who defied him on the Mike Evans vote. Seems they're being stripped of committee assignments and physically moved out of the Capitol. At least that's what I heard. I am probably naive for thinking attention may shame him but I'm in an optimistic mood today.

As a GA voter and devoted Auburn alum and football fan, I ave every reason to want a playoff. For the uninitiated, Auburn was completely screwed by the BCS a few years back. That said, I am thrilled to know that the pressing issues facing us in GA are handled so well that these imbeciles have time for this crap.
