Mary Norwood has announced she's dipping her toe into the Atlanta mayoral race waters. Below is the press release:
MARY NORWOOD ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE FOR MAYOR OF ATLANTA
Mary Norwood, an Atlanta City Councilwoman serving in her second term as a representative elected citywide, announced the formation of an Exploratory Committee for a Mayorâs race today.
âItâs official. I have filed the papers to form an Exploratory Committee for Mayor,â she said. âPeople all over the City have asked me to run for Mayor, and I am asking for your support and for your endorsement, too. I hope I can count on you. You can count on me.â
The Exploratory Committee consists of over 120 citizens from 88 neighborhoods throughout the entire city of Atlanta, with representation from every Council District and every NPU. âI am thrilled and honored that so many people with such an impressive cumulative history of building better communities have agreed to introduce me to their neighbors. With their help, I will be everywhere in Atlanta,â says Norwood. A complete list of the Exploratory Committee is available at www.MaryNorwoodforMayor.com.
Rest of the release available after the jump.
While serving as a Citywide Councilwoman, Mary Norwood has established a reputation for accessibility, meeting with voters in large public gatherings as well as small discussions in votersâ living rooms. âRunning for Mayor would be exactly the same,â she says, âI would be everywhere as a campaign unfolds, listening, learning, advocating, activating.â
âMy motto remains the same,â Norwood continues. âIt is Accountability You Can Count On.â
More on her record and her vision for Atlantaâs future can be found at www.MaryNorwoodforMayor.com.
Norwood is one of only three Councilpersons elected Citywide. She has been elected twice, the first time by an overwhelming majority, the second time unanimously. She serves on the Transportation Committee, on the Committee on Council, where she is the Vice Chair, and on the Community Development and Human Resources Committee. In prior years she also served on the Finance/Executive, Public Safety, Transportation, and Zoning Committees. She has been Vice Chair of Zoning, of Transportation, and of Community Development and Human Resources.
A poll conducted by Lake Research Partners in 2007 among likely voters showed that Norwood is in a very strong position to run for mayor in 2009, running first among the leading candidates in a field that includes Lisa Borders, Robb Pitts, Cathy Woolard, Ceasar Mitchell, and Kasim Reed.
Norwood has substantial support in every part [of] the City, the polling report shows. Lake Research has conducted polls for the Shirley Franklin Mayoral 2001 campaign, the 2004 Leah Sears Supreme Court campaign, and the 2006 Hank Johnson Congressional and Carol Hunstein Supreme Court campaigns, as well as many other polls for successful candidates across the country. Celinda Lake is nationally recognized as one of the experts on electing women candidates. The polling report is available on request.
Norwood is married to Dr. Felton Norwood, a retired pediatrician.
