The following e-mail and photo came to CL from Alex W., a self-described "Lifetime Water Drinker" in southern Indiana. Alex is worried we're not taking our drought seriously.
Greetings,I was shopping with friends in the local WalMart store
here in Southern Indiana when I came upon a pretty
bottle of water. My interest in where exactly people
were getting this "safer" source of water lead me to
inspect the label.
My jaw dropped as I read,
Bottled 3-03-08
Bottled by DS Waters of America Inc.
6750 Discovery Blvd.
Mableton, Georgia
Source Springs, Blue Ridge, GA
Perhaps I am misunderstanding the situation in
Georgia, but I recall hearing there was a drought on.
Is this correct? The University of Georgia seems to
believe so. They have an entire site at
http://www.caes.uga.edu/topics/disasters/drought/
dedicated to the drought.
Indiana, thankfully, is not in a drought. In fact,
it's pretty much guaranteed we are going to get rain
tonight and tomorrow, again. Don't get me wrong, I
don't want to mock your situation. God forbid anyone
should ever not have enough water.
Still, I gotta ask. Why are you sending us water?
Don't take this the wrong way, and pardon my Northern
City tongue, but are your peoples ret.. err...,
mentally handicapped?
I live a rock throw from the Wabash River which has
been flooded since January. The Ohio and the
Mississippi, as far as I know, are still flowing
strong out here.
I will attach some photos taken with a cellphone
camera as evidence of this seeming mental incapacity
on someone's part.
Yours in deep concern,
Alex W.

PS. Pardon if I sent this to the wrong address, but I
do believe there is something of a better story than
what I am writing. I will be sending this same copy to
Flagpole in Athens. Better err, Wetter Days

Well you see Mr Alex, you cannot really buy water, you can only rent it. Catch my drift? What we sell you at $2.99/12 oz. will eventually end back in the Ohio river and flow right on downstream here to Sonnyland! Er, I mean Georgia. We'll dip our old bucket into the river and repour that murky, brackish water into our filter doohickee, rebottle that stuff and send it right back to you to buy again! I reckon now you'll be seein the the smart thinkin in recyclin your squirt water fer ya and down he we just keep on grinnin. Our yards may be brown but our pockets are green as kin be.
Seriously Alex, I do not want to judge where you choose to buy your goods at, but if you were to upscale the retailer where you make your water purchases you will see better quality water available from more interesting Georgia cities. If you go to K-Mart you will see water bottled by the Savannah River Company just a stones throw from Augusta. Don't worry too much if it glows a little bit. I believe Target in the Southern Indiana markets sell water bottled downstream from one of our popular, amongst the republicans at least, coal-fired power plants in Columbus.
