Poll shows Georgia presidential votes up for grabs

BOB BARR: Ready for a rumble (Photo by Joeff Davis)

Last week I wrote that a Bob Barr presidential run could put Georgia's Electoral College vote within reach for Sen. Barack Obama in November, turning our red state blue.

Insider Advantage released a poll yesterday quantifying my gut feeling.

Of 652 likely voters from Georgia polled by I.A., Sen. John McCain got 45%, Obama got 35%, and Barr got 8%. 12% were undecided.

Obama's campaign keeps hinting it plans to campaign hard in states where Bush trounced Kerry in 2004. If the Obama campaign's polling tells them the same thing Insider Advantage is saying, and Barr's campaign isn't damaged by reports about his political action committee's spending habits, then metro Atlanta might be in for some serious general election presidential campaigning for the first time since I moved here in 1997.

All I can say is, what are you smoking? We may have a shot at the senate race, but unless we have about a 80% black voter turnout there is no way he can overcome the amount of people who just won't vote for him because of his race. Also, the RNC and John McCain no they can't lose Georgia. They will pour their meage resources into a few states and Georgia will be one of them. If it starts getting close, we will start seeing some of the nastest and sickening campaning possible to scare people.

I didn't say Obama is going to win. I said a strong Barr candidacy puts Georgia in play for the first time since Perot's runs in '92 and '96. I don't smoke.

If McCain is forced to "pour meager resources" into Georgia to secure a state where he shouldn't have to spend any money, that would be a tactical victory for Obama. Those are resources McCain won't have for true battleground states like Ohio and possibly Virginia. That's a big "if" but the combination of Barr's name recognition and popularity in parts of Georgia and Obama's ability to get out the black vote could force McCain to play defense here instead of offense there.

Murray, I am neither white nor black, and I will not vote for Obama to make a statement in their unfair treatment of Hillary Clinton. As much as Obama people want to deceive themselves, Hillary Clinton's supporters are not going to vote for Obama even though she votes for him herself. The message is that clear. Therefore, even all black vote for Obama, it might not be enough to win in November due to the votes lost because of the democratic party machine.
