DeKalb is not Decatur

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Do you find it annoying when the news media uses the name Decatur to refer to places or events that are outside Decatur's city limits?

The AJC's coverage of yesterday's double-murder in DeKalb County was first reported with the headline "2 women killed, children flee in Decatur." Later in the day, the headline was corrected to "2 women killed, children flee in DeKalb."

Are there other parts of Atlanta so routinely misidentified?

And, yes, I live in Decatur.

My favorite is when I'm looking through real estate listings trying to find a nice place in Decatur where we can live, and about 60% of the housing tagged as being in Decatur is really considerably outside the southeastern border of the city, often near the 'Stop-n-Stop' on Glenwood. It's hard finding a nice-sounding identity when you're in the unincorporated part of a county. But I'm not ashamed -- I'll proudly proclain that I grew up in the vast exurbs of northeastern Cobb County (well, maybe 'proudly' is a stretch).

I'm guessing that since Decatur the city is pretty old, many areas are still referred to as part of Decatur and have Decatur mailing addresses even though the present City of Decatur no longer has jurisdiction over them. You just have to know that the 30030 zip is City of Decatur, 30033 is right nearby, etc. 30032 and 30034 are farther out.

The blog Decatur Metro recently posted a historic map of Decatur showing how it has grown since 1900. http://decaturmetro.com/2008/06/18/decatur-historic-annexation-map/ The parts of DeKalb south of Decatur appear never to have been part of the City of Decatur.
