As Atlanta's traffic idles...

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 6:51 PM

...Decatur's traffic declines. That's what Nick at DecaturMetro discovered when he perused the 38-page traffic study completed by the developers of the proposed 315 W. Ponce project in the smart-growth posterchild's downtown (more on that project, called Decatur Court, later.)

He says:

There’s two sets of data…first from the GDOT…

At the intersection of Church and Ponce, traffic declined 4.31% from 2001 to 2006.

At the intersection of Clairemont and Garden Lane, traffic declined 4.37% from 2001 to 2006.

The other set of data uses a much smaller base (hundreds instead of thousands) and compares count data from a 1999 “speed study” to data collected specifically for the 315 project.

At the intersection of Ponce and Ponce Place, traffic declined 2.65% from 1999 to 2008.

At the intersection of Fairview and Montgomery, traffic declined 2.65% from 1999 to 2008.

At the intersection of Oakland and Wilton, traffic declined 3.63% from 1999 to 2008.

At the intersection of Oakland and Ponce Place, traffic declined 2.35% from 1999 to 2008.

It might not just be more walkable in Decatur, but safer to walk as well.

Hey Thomas...thanks for the post. One note that I've updated on my site...these declines aren't total declines as first posted...they are AVERAGE ANNUAL. The total percentage decline is more like 20% for almost all of these intersections. Really quite impressive! Thanks again!

Thought that decline holds true when comparing 2001 to 2006, I fail to see the trend continued in the 2007 GDOT stats. Also, some years between show increases at key intersections, too. I'd like to know who is making these conclusions and how.
