New legislators win seats

Now that we've recovered from yesterday's elections, it's worth noting a few Legislative seats that will change hands.

In Clayton County, the battle of the Democratic Gails will result in Gail Buckner returning to the General Assembly by defeating first-term state Sen. Gail Davenport. Buckner had left her Jonesboro House seat two years ago to run for secretary of state, but will come back as the District 44 senator.

In a lovely act of karma, right-wing harpy Nancy Schaefer has been ousted from the state Senate by Delta pilot Jim Butterworth.

In recent years, Schaefer, a conservative Christian activist, had developed a strangely close association with the Church of Scientology. But the final straw for her northeast Georgia constituents seemed to be her jumping into – then out of – the 10th District congressional race and announcing she wouldn't run for re-election – then changing her mind.

In Southwest Atlanta's District 61, Bob Holmes was an institution. First elected in 1974, he was among the longest-serving House members and the dean of the Atlanta delegation when he announced his retirement this year. His seat will be filled by real estate broker Ralph Long III, who defeated frequent candidate Keisha Waites.

In Southeast DeKalb, Stan Watson left his House District 91 seat to make an unsuccessful run for DeKalb CEO. He'll be replaced by Rahn Mayo, another real estate professional who has the additional distinction of being the son of the actor who played Fred Sanford's friend Grady on "Sanford and Son"

Finally, another open seat was created in DeKalb a few months back when District 93 Rep. Ron Sailor pleaded guilty to corruption. Dee Dawkins-Haigler won the post in a special election – then had to defend it in the primary before she could even enjoy any of the perks. But she did, so it seems we'll see her at the Capitol.
