Bounce-ology

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 4:51 PM

The presidential polls at Real Clear Politics have been quite volatile since the party conventions.

After the Democratic convention, Obama's lead in the polls opened up to its widest point. Since the Republican convention last week, the polls have swung even more sharply in the other direction, with McCain pulling ahead.

If polls are even a partially accurate view of American voting tendencies, then these polls are saying that several million Americans decided to vote for Obama during his convention, then changed their minds and decided to vote for McCain.

Who are these people?

To be perfectly clear -- I DO NOT mean someone's an idiot for preferring McCain over Obama, or vice versa.

I'm simply wondering how its possible to go back-and-forth between two candidates who plan to pursue very different policies.

How does one think "McCain's the one for me. No, now Obama is.  No, wait, I like McCain again," in the span of 10 days?
