Poll: Chambliss leads Martin in U.S. Senate runoff by three points

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 3:36 AM

A new InsiderAdvantage/Politico poll shows U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss with a three-point lead over Democratic candidate Jim Martin.

From Politico:

The poll shows Chambliss leading Martin by 3 percentage points, 50 percent to 47 percent, with 3 percent of respondents undecided. The first-term GOP senator's lead is within the poll’s four-point margin of error. The Politico/InsiderAdvantage poll surveyed 523 likely voters on Nov. 23.

The poll numbers are almost identical to the general election results, when Chambliss fell just short of the 50 percent necessary to win the seat outright on Election Night. He led Martin 49.8 to 46.8 percent, with a Libertarian candidate taking three percent of the vote.

“This thing’s going to be a nail-biter. We don’t know who’s going to turn out and we don’t know how it’s going to turn out, but it’s going to be a close race,” said InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery.

Towery says a visit from Barack Obama could change the race. Chances of such an event happening before the Dec. 2 runoff, however, seem increasingly unlikely.

On one hand, I continue to wonder in amazement how a large majority of Georgia citizens can continue to throw their support behind politicians (Republican or Democrat alike) who haven't done a damn thing for us during their time in office. Yet, on the other hand, I can also see why the absence of opportunities & progressive thinking are nonexistent throughout the South...particularly in Georgia. As someone who was born in the D.C. area and moved to Georgia four years ago, I am continually at a loss for words over seeing how ignorant & utterly naive people in Georgia truly are! This state is drowning financially, unemployment in Georgia is rising faster than other Southern cities/states, and the voters continue to vote for the same "good 'ol boys Republican clique" who haven't done squat! Amazing...simply amazing!

I'd have to agree 100% with the above blogger San. Georgia citizens (those who do vote) are sooooo behind times and out of touch with other states! They cry cause they're losing their jobs, homes and way of life, but too stupid to do the right thing by simply voting for people like Jim Martin and Jim Powell who will actually do something to help save us.

San - So DC is home? A city so disfunctional it re-elected Marion Barry. That says a lot. Georgia has a lot of problems, but surely you can come up with a better measuring stick than DC.

I gotta go with Dale on this one. We may have more than our fair share of Team Republicans who would put an elephant flag on their cars on gameday but Georgia has a growing # of progressive thinkers too. Also, Arnold, we've got to lose this notion that the gov't is here to save us. As Dale knows, I'm a liberal through and through. But if you think Jim Martin in the Senate is going to magically transform solve everyone's problems, the next four years are going to be a big disappointment to you.

We need to keep in mind that there are many good choices from multiple parties. I share Reagan's veiw that governmetn doesn't fix most problems, but causes most problems. That puts me at odds with Mr T. most of the time. I don't vote based on party, ut, since I am a Conservative, I most often align with the Republican or Libertarian. Chambliss gets low marks for his bailout vote (obvious bad idea) and sucking the tit of Imperial Sugar. Supporting business and being a shameless whore are not the same thing. Martin gets low marks because he has already said that he will be a rubber stamp for Obama amd that is a bad idea, especially if he is the 60th vote. I want a representative who will at least try to make the appearance of some freewill and backbone. He supports more of my wishes than his opponent, so I will hold my nose and choose Big Saxby.
