Atlanta indie horror film The Signal has received a nomination for the John Cassavettes Award from Film Independent's Spirit Awards. The prestigious awards honors excellence in indie cinema and, according to Wikipedia:

The Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award is presented to the creative team of films budgeted at less than $500,000 by Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to independent film and independent filmmakers. It is named after actor/screenwriter/director John Cassavetes, a pioneer of American independent film.

Directed by David Bruckner, Jacob Gentry and Dan Bush, The Signal finds competition from Prince of Broadway, Take Out, Turn the River and In Search of a Midnight Kiss. Previous John Cassavetes Award winners include The Blair Witch Project and The Station Agent.

As a home-grown film production, The Signal put a feather in Atlanta's cultural cap when it was selected for inclusion in the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. It was released in February of this year.
