C.T. Martin: I'll show you kids what a belt's for!

Posted by Scott Henry on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 5:18 PM

Forget the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Atlanta's cantankerous Councilman C.T. Martin wants to start the Brotherhood of the Unsaggy Britches.

Nearly a year after a citizens' task force on droopy trousers (we only wish we were making this up) decided that his proposed city-wide ban on visible knickers was one bone-headed idea, Martin is bouncing back with a new resolution commending Morehouse College for discouraging the "wearing of exposed underwear."

Here's a bit of the language of Martin's measure:

WHEREAS, the Atlanta City Council established a task force to recommend whether the City of Atlanta, Georgia should amend its indecency code to make it illegal for exposure of one’s undergarments in a public place; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Robert Franklin, President of Atlanta’s Morehouse College, has recently instituted a practice of curtailing offensive dress and language on its campus in response to a growing backlash against the sartorial and linguistic byproducts of today’s culture which encourages thuggish violence and crude materialism over education; and

WHEREAS, Morehouse College, one of the nation’s leading higher educational institutions for men, provides every freshman with a tie and a blazer in the college’s primary color, maroon, as a tangible symbol of the image of a gentleman

And so forth. After the whereases, Martin delivers the message:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ATLANTA, that City Councilman C. T. Martin and the Atlanta City Council, through this resolution, continue to call upon all colleges and universities, secondary schools and places of worship, to join into the dialogs concerning the lasting negative effects that improper behavior and decorum, offensive dress and offensive language have on our youth in today’s society.

Martin is expected to introduce his resolution at Monday's Council meeting. No word yet on whether Andre 3000 or Fonzworth Bentley are planning to attend.
