Michelle Obama unveils the Truth

And, no, it’s not her husband’s birth certificate.

Michelle Obama delivered a statement at the unveiling ceremony for a new bust of Sojourner Truth at the Capitol on Tuesday:

I hope that Sojourner Truth would be proud to see me, a descendant of slaves, serving as the first lady of the United States of America

Sojourner Truth, a prominent abolitionist and proto-Civil Rights/proto-feminist activist (groundbreaking, especially for the 1800s), was an acclaimed speaker in her own right, due in no small part to her speech “Ain’t I a Woman.”

But, alas, the Huffington Post headline reads: “Michelle Obama Honors Sojourner Truth, Wears a Striped Dress.” Arrgh!! Do we all think it’s so important what the First Lady wears? I mean, every day of her life?

In the LA Times, on the other hand, we find an article titled “L.A. Artist’s ‘Truth’ to be unveiled,” a nice background story on Artis Lane — the sculptor who created the “Truth” statue and who, like our current president, is of mixed ancestry.
