The Georgia Department of Community Affairs is ramping up a statewide recycling education campaign called "You Gotta Be Kidding" in which fictional characters give the idiotic reasons why they don't recycle, only to have their MINDS BLOWN BY THE FACTS.

The state agency has unleashed the full power of the Internet to support its mission, creating a presence at Twitter, YouTube, Blogger, WordPress, Facebook, every damn thing you can imagine. That makes sense, as the campaign is target toward the 25- to -34-year-old demographic, one which is least likely to recycle.

After the jump, meet Tommy Krenshaw, one of the hilariously named fictional characters who lives in Atlanta. Of course, our hometown representative is a classic chatch. He wants to own waterfront property on the new planet Earthlings will colonize once we turn this one into a festering pile of broken remote controls and nonbiodegradable diapers. Tommy, WTF?!?!

When not cranking tunes, crushing brews, or meeting hot chicks at American Pie, Krenshaw is "underemployed as a factory maintenance custodian." He most likely rents a Post-owned property somewhere outside I-285, we're sure, where he likes to rock poolside to Creed. The clubhouse has a gym, brah, which is like, totally fucking sweet.

Tommy's like, totally immobile, though. When not not working, Krens loiters outside planetariums, all of which sit empty thanks to the state cutting funds for field trips.

He's not all that dumb, though. Tommy speaks Latin!

But seriously, the department has begun an ambitious campaign. According to a recent survey, nearly 45 percent of Georgians say they don't recycle. Despite all the naysayin' about the practice, it makes sense to do it. Recycled items can re-enter the marketplace and be sold. Re-used items require less energy to be manufactured.

And while some places have done worthy things with their landfills — New Jersey's turned many of theirs into rolling greenspace and DeKalb County sells methane emitted from its mounds of filth — there's still the issue of where you put the trash.

An Atlanta City Councilmember once told me: "Everyone wants their trash to be hauled off. But no one wants a landfill built next door." Atlanta currently trucks most of its waste to several landfills outside the city. That service comes at a cost — and those landfills will eventually be filled to capacity. Good luck trying to buy property inside the city limits to throw your burger wrappers and slop.

Hugh, so you think that when the budget is tight the first money that should get cut is the money that works to promote recycling and save the environment we depend on>
