Normally you'd be more likely to see double after a party, not beforehand. Onstage Atlanta's bump-and-grind musical The Wild Party qualifies as a rarity, being one of two musicals based on same source, which debuted within weeks of each other in the same New York theatrical season.
Joseph Moncure Marchs mock-epic poem about Roaring '20s decadence was originally published in 1928, but found renewed cachet in 1994 with a new edition illustrated by Art Spiegelman. At Onstage, Barbara Cole Uterhardt directs Andrew Lippa's Off-Broadway version of the show. This clip of "The Life of the Party," features Wicked's Idina Menzel. gives a little of the flavor of the piece. In the similarly decadent, show-stopping rendition at Onstage, Marcie Millard smashes chair at end in almost "punk rock" show of defiance.
Below the jump, you'll find a clip from the 54th Tony Awards broadcast, which features a medley from Michael John LaChiusa and George C. Wolfe's higher-profile Broadway musical. It features Toni Collette, Mandy Patinkin and Eartha Kitt, and looks a lot more glitzy than the Lippa version.
