Getting Dis-placed at Studioplex Thursday

" width=

Artist Johana Moscoso, aka Miss Fix-It, posted a rather cryptic list of instructions on her blog last week, in preparation for Thursday's performance at Studioplex Lofts. Her Untitled Relation Project will incorporate audience participation, and is just one of many entries to Dis-placed, a one-night show exploring "industrial design, anatomical structures, chemical reactions, spiritual inquiry and 'socialarchies.'" Moscoso writes:

Performer Rules

1. The performer cannot wear bright colors such as orange, green or fuchsia. Neutral colors are preferred.

2. The performer will wear a red hood, a red belt and a red boot (provide by the artist).

3. The performer will bring their elements to work. For example: Laptop, sewing machine, pencils, and books.

4. The user is free to remove the boot when entering the door of the restroom, and will be required to re–attach it when they go back to work.

5. The performer is not allowed to leave the Gallery while wearing this boot.

6. The performer should follow the artists instructions using the pieces.

A red hood and boots? With laptops and sewing machines? Judging by Moscoso's previous work, it seems likely that volunteers will act the part of bewildered protagonists in a whimsical work/life metaphor where the distinctions between machines and the people who use them are blurred. For example, check out her outrageous Mary Kay Protection Device — a nonsensical "suit" of armor for riding public transportation — and her Multitask Walker performance at last year's Le Flash. And as her solo show this year would suggest, the young and typically soft-spoken Moscoso seems more confident in recruiting audience participation and taking advantage of gallery space. (The show was planned as a fundraiser to help purchase prostheses for local special needs children.) I'm not entirely sure what to expect, but, in this case, perhaps it's a good thing?

Dis-placed is scheduled this Thurs., Aug. 6 from 7-9:30 at Studioplex 143, featuring the work of Yi-Hsin Tzeng, Carmen Martinez, Johana Moscoso, Tiffany Sinnott, Jordon Hersey, Alex Hamilton, Morgan Alexander, and Courtney Cottrell.
