Local LGBT rights political activist Kyle Bailey has been named interim executive director of National Stonewall Democrats.

Bailey talked to CL today about the move, saying "I'm holding the seat until the board of directors finds a new executive director. It could be a couple of months, it could be a little longer."

He'll be taking over for Jon Hoadley, whom the National Stonewall Democrats said in a press release today will be accepting a position leading One Kalamazoo, a campaign formed to protect the Michigan city's non-discrimination ordinance in an upcoming ballot fight.

Bailey, 26, has risen steadily through the ranks in local political activism circles since graduating from the University of Georgia in 2005. During Jim Martin's 2006 campaign for lieutenant governor, he served as deputy finance director.

He then became community relations director for YouthPride before taking over as political director for Georgia Equality in 2007. It was after that that he moved onto the national stage with Stonewall Democrats, first as director of national and chapter development before being named chief operations officer this past July.

"It is the goal of Stonewall Democrats to, first, elect pro-equality Democrats to office," Bailey tells CL, "and then to hold them accountable to their promises. It's a matter of courage."

Stonewall Democrats is also at work with labor unions and have joined forces with the Communications Workers of America to help pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Employee Free Choice Act.
