A teabag a day keeps health care away

Posted by Andisheh Nouraee on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 1:51 PM

Many of the same people responsible for Atlanta's Tea Party protests will gather downtown Saturday for an event called America's Health Care Town Hall.

Don't be fooled by the name.

Of the 17 hosts, speakers and panelists scheduled to speak, not one appears to support health care reform.

Not one.

It's instead a roster of Republican Party politicians (past and present), Baracknophobic "Tea Party" organizers, and industry lobbyists.

This gathering isn't America's anything. It's an advertisement opposing health care reform and a Republican Party Pep rally. They should be honest and call it what it is.

The name is appropriate because opposing the left's health care "reform" plan is good for America.

There is no 'left' in American politics, merely shades of conservatism. And US health care is the worst and most exorbitantly costly in the developed world, so reforming it has to be good for the country. Big employers are gasping for help in curbing the spiralling cost of insurance and taxpayers won't know what hit them if they have to start paying as we go for unreformed healthcare for aging boomers. It's reform or go broke for the USA.

True, the government will go broke paying for health care if something doesn't change. However, rather than have the government essentially nationalize the health care industry the government should remove itself entirely from providing healthcare. Eliminate medicare and medicaid, remove the restrictions on risk-based pricing for health insurance, and stop mandating that employers provide coverage for their employees. The above reforms would establish a true free market healthcare system (unlike what we have now), therby increasing competition and reducing costs to the consumer.

I'd have more sympathy for the teabagers if Bush had tried to do some meaningful reform of Healthcare during his 8 years, much of which was during a time when he had the house and Senate. The system is broken. So just don't oppose it suggest a change. The fact we've been at this Since Clinton's first term and still things just get worse indicates that lobbyists and people making a dime off radio and tv shows by spinning hate for the sake of it are impeding democracy. Our industry can't compete with countries that have a better healthcare system. The growing age of our population will just make things worse. How appropriate the teabag name is cause these people are certainly being teabagged by a few selfish and greedy interest groups. Unfortunately they stand in the way of our economy and bodies remaining healthy.

HCL3, Do me a favor and list one thing, action or activity that is not controlled, mandated or sanctioned by the government. Name one thing that the government has no role in the protection of or determining the process. Remember, that's one thing that the government plays NO PART in, directly or indirectly. You see, unfettered capitalism is a myth. What you describe necessitates complete abstinence on the part of the government. In that's the case, who watches the watchmen?

Great idea, HCL3. Just let people fend for themselves when they get cancer and heart disease! Wonder why nobody else thought of that?
