Oxendine: Build an interstate through East Atlanta? Let's talk!

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Fri, Aug 28, 2009 at 2:56 PM

Good morning, John Oxendine, Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate. What bad ideas do you have for us this morning? Oh, you think we should talk about building a "parallel downtown connector" that could plow through most of East Atlanta! OK. Lemme just first clean up all this coffee I spit all over my desk.

Oxendine pitches the idea — along with a Western Bypass, a new Northern Arc, and a couple of other projects that will most likely never get built — in this campaign video.

Building a massive asphalt artery through some of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods isn't going to win Oxendine any support inside the perimeter.

But this pie-in-the-sky idea, which will most likely never happen, could win the gubernatorial hopeful points with the North Fulton crowd, a tried and true Republican enclave that's thought to most likely favor Karen Handel. The Ox says that people who live in the Ga. 400 and I-85 corridors — unlike potential voters in Cobb County — don't have the luxury of bypassing the city.

But anything to get Georgia out of gridlock, right?

I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that The Ox is a pandering, disingenuous political whore. He just wants to help us - especially the children. You don't hate children, do you?

I'm rooting for John Monds, the Libertarian. Ox is a joke. I live in Alpharetta... it seems to me that I can get on 285 to BYPASS Atlanta pretty easily, or I can hop on MARTA at North Springs. Don't tell me I only have one route to take!

This guys seems like someone who will say almost anything to get someone to pay attention to him... so far unsuccessfully. I thought conservatism was about local control. But NO, we can't let the Atlanta region handle its own transportation when the state can continue to funnel billions to its road-building buddies. The republicans in the state government are a disgrace to TRUE conservatism.

Ox has lost it. If he ever had a grasp on it.

John Oxendine is a virulant homophobe who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the gay citizens of Georgia never enjoy the same "privileges" as the straight community. I hope his run is a resounding, spectacular failure. I sincerely hope that the news media calls him to task on his anti-gay agenda before he gains a solid foothole with the uninformed voters.

But Jeff, you're forgetting that OX 'kicks' it with the original Lone Wolf, Chuck Norris!

It just _kills_ me to think about all of you poor victims in North Fulton--all you want to do is go to the airport, and here I am, selfishly forcing you to take the Connector because my _house_ is right here in your way. You want to get to the airport quicker? Here's a thought--MOVE CLOSER TO THE AIRPORT.
