This morning, state Sen. Kasim Reed launched a 30-second TV ad on local cable and network stations, a few days after Council President Lisa Borders began running her own ad.
Thus begins what political pundits typically describe as the real race the moment when candidates introduce themselves to home-bound voters through the magic of television.
The Reed ad, titled "Making Atlanta Safe," focuses on what else? public safety, claiming he "has a plan to hire more police officers":
If I had a criticism, it might be that, throughout the spot, Kasim's voice doesn't come across as very energized (in contrast to the hyper Mary Norwood). But I've known the guy for a while and that's just how he speaks.
Borders' ad also deals with public safety, claiming that "no one is more committed to protecting our families from crime" and touting her endorsement by the police union:
If I had to take issue with the Borders ad, it would be the claim that "She made the tough choices." As we all know, council presidents don't vote, so I'm not entirely sure what that statement means.
Both Borders and Reed have a number of other videos, including supporter testimonials, on their YouTube pages. Borders' is here and Reed's is here.
Norwood, on the other hand, has only a few videos on her YouTube page and, so far, no TV ad.

Thanks for the post. From what I understand, Mr. Reed's ad purchase was substantially larger than Lisa's. This should bode well for him moving forward. Any word on when Spikes is going to hit the air?
Spikes for Mayor! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UCR2jF2GB0
How would you know that? Sounds like some straight up insider knowledge from a Reed or Norwood staffer. Puh-leeze. And that bootleg Spikes commercial! Straight up iMovie! Oh my God, my sides are splitting laughing at that dreck.
@ Betsy: There's nothing "insider" about the following sentence from the article: "..state Sen. Kasim Reed launched a 30-second TV ad on local cable and network stations..." If your ad solely appears on cable (Borders), that's not a large buy. Also, note that "network stations" is plural, not singular... I take from that sentence that the ad will appear on multiple local TV stations, not just one...
Looks like Reed won this battle. They all have a ways to go tho.
It's about time! Someone please tell me Spikes was kidding. Was that a jingle I heard at the end of his "ad"? LOL. Please take a nap Jesse.
I wonder if the Reed campaign really bought this ad time. I never heard the Andy Young ad on radio despite the Reed's campaign claims of buying ad time for it. My guess is they made a small network purchase that will amount to very little in the way of votes.
That Spikes ad makes me want some damn barbeque. Poncey, this is the statement that makes me think you're an insider: "Mr. Reeds ad purchase was substantially larger than Lisas." Unless you found that information on Google or something, congratulations! You're an insider. Check under your keyboard for your official no-prize.
Betsy- Why so negative? I think the ad was effective at sending the message that his administration will focus on crime. I think the most effective leaders are the ones that focus and deliver on specific issues. It appears Reed has chosen his focus. The commercial will likely resonate with those who find crime to be a top tier issue.
Betsy writes; "That Spikes ad makes me want some damn barbeque." I'm buying, 'girl.' When/where? Message in a bottle?
there is no inside information regarding cable tv ad buys. ALL stations are required to report which candidates have bought air time, what time they've bout and how much they've bought. It's public information. Duh.
