Here's the Democratic Party mailer labeling Norwood a Republican

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 11:42 PM

Here's the second of two Democratic Party of Georgia mailers that allege mayoral candidate Mary Norwood is actually a Republican. Jim Galloway's got photos of the other. SpaceyG also provided a link to one.

The photo cut off the sources on the mailer. They are: (1) FEC Reports; Georgia State Ethics Commission Reports; City of Atlanta Campaign Contribution Disclosure Reports (2) Georgia Secretary of State's voter registration records, Reg No: 02588832; AJC, 10/10/09 (3) AJC, 10/21/08; Creative Loafing 5/5/09.

Here's the Norwood ad in which the candidate says she's voted for Democrats (and one quizzical Texan named Ross) in previous presidential elections.

There's been much debate as to whether the Georgia Democratic Party bungled by entering the Atlanta mayoral race, which is non-partisan. Blog For Democracy first broached the topic. Galloway offered some insight. Peach Pundit commenters debated it all day. Andre Walker, who sits on a party committee, expressed disappointment. In Macon, Georgia Women Vote's Amy Morton offered a wry note of support. Sid Cottingham, who lives closer to the Okefenokee Swamp than he does Atlanta, was shocked.

Guess we'll find out on Tuesday whether the donkeys' strategy backfired — or was the secret weapon Reed or Borders needed to chip away at Norwood's support.

Whether or not the fliers work is to be determined. However, I think the guys at Peach Pundit even agreed the mail pieces were very well done.

I still want y'all to tell me what the suicide bomber lady is doing on this mailer, the second picture down. She's even more depressing than the election itself.

If Norwood really is a republican then she'll be the first republican I have ever voted for...

These shameless attempts by Mary Norwood to use her supporters in the Democratic Party to cause folks to associate her name with that of Abraham Lincoln are so transparent.

Tidbits from Lisa's disclosures. Who are the Alabama Andersons and why did they give Lisa at least $24,000 in big dollops? $3,000 from the taxicab biz, presumably to ensure that Atlanta's cabs will remain the western world's worst. A few airport concession donations. Site Engineering - any sewer connection? Yet more, on top of prior period hauls, from Coke, GE, Cousins, Sembler and Portman. A grand from Lynn Riley the Republican from N Fulton. Neutralized by $2400 from Cathy Woolard? $2400 from Upfront Megatainment - so Kasim has company in the hip-hop biz. But at least Lisa is telling us who gave her the latest moolah. The city does not have Mary and Kasim's disclosures up yet. Why not?

@fresh "If Norwood really is a republican then she’ll be the first republican I have ever voted for…" But maybe not the first total ninny you've voted for? By the time Mary has puzzled over financial reports and found where Shirley hid loose change, the city's bond rating will be CCC and there'll be 500 cops left on the force. She's a nice person, she cares, she's reached out to everyone, and she's entirely unfit for executive office. Never mind the gaffes on camera. If you watched her performance during the water-sewer fight on council, you'll know she's in over her head.

I'm interested to know why some staunch Democrats (i.e. Fresh) are voting for Norwood even if they believe she may be a Republican. Please explain, inquiring minds want to know.

I hate to bring this up but why can't Mary move one side of her face?

This just in. Republican Voter Alert robocall attacking Mary for saying nice things about Obama and nasty things about the Republican Convention she attended. As Mary regains Southside support by reclaiming her independent credentials, could she actually erode her Buckhead support? Are they that Obamaphobic in Buckhead? One of the funniest things about this election is that Bidness (Committee for Better Atlanta - i.e., chamber, Buckhead coalition etc.) loathes Mary and wants the Cousins candidate in office. Yet the average professional, affluent Atlantan, who would usually go along with anything Bidness says, is going to vote for Mary. Maybe it's not just race. Maybe the taxpayer has noticed that Bidness does not care what their pet sewer expansions and TAD boondoggles do to tax rates and water bills.

Kasim won this evening's TV debate. The only one who has conviction. His first priorities on the job: new police chief - who knows how to fight gangs - and getting pension expense under control. What will he do about panhandling? Enforce the law. And so on. He's firm and he knows what he's doing. Borders was all about what could not be done. And she's borrowed Mary's accountability trademark - how sad is that? Still exudes that entitled 'my turn to be mayor' attitude, as if she were talking to the chamber of commerce and not to the voters who pay for it all. Mary flapping about as ever - she really would have a hell of a time trying to run City Hall. Most flustered when Spikes asked why council had never trusted her with a committee to chair. And pretty shaky on her use of council funds. Spikes is right on with saying DWM's capital program management is a disgrace (that's thousands of dollars for every man, woman and child guys), but nobody gets it. Also that Mary and Lisa have been on council for years and not come up with anything. But then Jesse panders by saying we need to keep the shelter at P'tree and Pine.
