Time and Place: Chomping

Mmm, doesn't that look appetizing? As the man next to me so eloquently put it, "It looks like a bucket of dog shit, doesn't it?" But it sure tasted excellent. This chili was being served up by the Vortex at the Chomp and Stomp chili cook-off in Cabbagetown Nov. 7. Having such a gigantic pot of chili meant that toward the end of the day the crowds were lining up at their booth. Of course, they never saw the stuff from my perspective

It was fun photographing chili because it looks so disgusting, especially with direct flash, and in a giant metal pot, with chunks and brown stains lining the sides. Interestingly, despite being horrible to look at, chili is, as we all know, completely delicious. Other teams at the cook-off got quite creative with their chili naming. There was CILF (Chili I'd Like to Fork), Chilibrex (the prescription cure for headaches, backaches, and bad haircuts), Chef Boy-Ar-V, Whitey's Mighty Chicken Chili, and the chili that was "as delicious as it is blasphemous," the Pope-in Hot Chili.

Check out all the other delicious/disgusting photos from Chomp and Stomp.
