Mary Norwood lands second pol endorsement

For weeks now, Kasim Reed has been subtly making light of the fact that Mary Norwood had but a single elected official publicly backing her bid for mayor, saying things like, "I have said nothing negative about the one person who's chosen to support my opponent." It's a line that often gets a laugh from the crowd.

Well, no more. As of today, state Rep. Ralph "Lonely" Long has been joined by a fellow House member, Rep. Margaret Kaiser, who just so happens to be my own state representative. Both are Democrats.

I'm told by neighbors who've heard it that there's a robo-call going around with Kaiser endorsing Norwood, but I have yet to hear it myself.

However, I did just just receive an e-mail from ex-Mayor Andy Young which contains a link to six-minute video featuring various politician and homeowner testimonials in favor of Reed. Some, like Sen. Nan Orrock, you may have heard before; others like Rep. Joe Wilkinson, a moderate Republican from Sandy Springs, are new. That download is here.

Reed's crass "the ONE person who supports my opponent" shows how tied to the political establishment he is. Kasim, Mary beat you by 8,000 votes on election day. 8,000 more people supported her than you. As a matter of fact, more people have voted for Mary Norwood than any other Atlanta elected official in the past 8 years - including Shirley Franklin. Good luck with your political blue blood endorsements - I hope they help you in District 6 (the accepted "deciding" district) - you know, the same District where Mary got 37% more supporters than you did. Dick.

The reason nobody serious endorses Mary is that she is an idiot. That is important information for citizens to grasp.

@SamIAm You make a good point. I think it's a bit foolish to attempt to make a point about your opponent's lack of endorsements and her candidacy when she got 46% of the general election vote. So far, I haven't heard of a single endorsements by anyone that has made an impact on this race-- especially since most of those endorsements (other than Borders and the ministers) were already in the bag before the general election.

I thought endorsements didn't matter to the Norwood campaign. If so, why are they sending robo calls out?

Hmm, ya got me there, SDV.

Another massive smear from Mary in mailboxes to day. Her campaign embraces the Big Lie. Repeat the distortions about Reed's taxes and ignore the fact that they have been debunked by the AJC. Yell that the other side has gone negative while spending a fortune on attacks. It may work on Dec 1. It will not work with bond buyers. After a few weeks of Mary's financial chaos, Buckhead would wish they had Bill Campbell back, and Kasim would seem like the Messiah.

SDV- It's clear that Norwood can do nothing right in your eyes. She never said that she didn't want endorsements, and you know that. What I've heard her say is that this race won't be decided by the endorsements on either side. I'm glad that Rep. Kaiser has endorsed Norwood and that a robocall was sent to her district. I hope it's helpful in getting out Norwood's voters.

I hope Galloway and Henry are being well paid by the Kasim machine. They're earning it.

You know what WARY OF MARY you have yet to produce one non-subjective reason as to why anyone should vote for Reed over Norwood. You represent the Atlanta smear machine perfectly. You will throw out all sorts of outlandish attacks (as you do almost every single day in this paper) and not back them up with ONE SINGLE FACT. You (and Scott Henry) have single-handedly convinced me to vote for Norwood in the runoff. And I didn't even get to vote in the first election because I was out of the country. And as far as endorsements... I wouldn't trust a SINGLE politician who was supported by any of the yokel knuckleheads who run this state. You think having those people support you makes you look good? Think again. And as far as Creative Loafing goes... your overt and over-the-top support of Reed has me questioning why I even read this rag. As an intown resident I have loved Loafing over the years, but not so much anymore. And you have Scott Henry to thank for that. I understand a paper endorsing one candidate over the other, but you are no longer reporting, you are simply shoving your opinion down the throats of your readers and calling it journalism. Much like FOX News. And much like FOX News I will no longer be turning to this "newspaper" for news.

Well, I have enjoyed reading the back-and-forth about which candidate is more evil, or venal, or all-'round sorry. I offer this, offered earlier tonight on the AJC's Web site: "Fulton County tax records show Reed has paid about $837.59 in late penalties on the two properties he's owned since 2002. He's paid $826.46 in interest, the records show. The records show Cascade Investors has paid $8,252.67 in late penalties and interest on its two properties since 2007. "Reed has a letter from his bank stating that it erred in not paying the taxes he paid on time in escrow on one of his properties. The candidate said late Friday there may be some errors regarding penalty and interest payments on his other property. ... "Here's a breakdown of how much money in late penalties and interest Reed has paid on the two properties he owns: Year Penalties Interest 2002 $0 $60.29 2003 $0 $87.16 2004 $0 $39.67 2005 $0 $63.29 2006 $9.36 $106.70 2007 $14.74 $60.68 2008 $813.49 $408.67

@Over It I have repeated ad nauseam on this site my highly objective reasoning for preferring Reed, but you may not have seen it, so one more time. Reed very early in the campaign confronted Atlanta's central budget problem: the pension expense that has soared in the past few years to voer $100mm per year (~20% of the gen fund total). He committed to rolling back the irresponsible benefit increases that Norwood and her colleagues voted for in 2001 and 2005. He thereby showed two key things: he has the ability to grasp the essentials and he has the guts to take a tough position. By contrast Norwood still claims not to understand the budget and umms and aahs about curbing the pension train wreck. If 8 years were not enough for her to learn the city finances - or if she simply refuses to deal with harsh reality - or a little of both - then as taxpayers and users of basic city services we would be in for a very rough ride with her as mayor. You can see Reed setting out this position on the FCTA and Campaign for Atlanta website video interviews, for example. Can't get more objective than that. My summary, that Mary is an idiot, is indeed a subjective interpretation of her position on the financial crisis facing Atlanta as well as her showing in debates and small-group discussions. I've also said she's a nice person and truly cares about people, but that's not good enough in view of the mess we're in.

Norwood has offically lost most of her support in SW Atlanta. She has no signs up and no GOTV workers in the streets today. I wonder what happened to all of her signs, LOL....

I have been puzzling over Wary of Mary, aka Borders on the Ridiculous, and I have decided that he/she is a pro at the game of spin. WoM/BotR, you are good. 'Fess up: Do you work for Reed? Or are you on staff at CL? Which is it? You are far more facile than the rest of us.

Again WARY... what you say is SUBJECTIVE!!! Maybe you should resign your post on the Reed campaign... You are just too stupid.

@Over it, you need to check the meaning of 'subjective' in the dictionary. @Grant Parker, I've never met Reed, let alone worked for him. Not a journalist with CL or anyone else, either. Just an interested observer with time on my hands. Let's all just hope we get a competent mayor elected on Tuesday. There's only one possible choice for that and it's not Mary.
