Atlanta attorney Jason Carter (and grandson of former President Jimmy Carter) informed friends last night via email that he was launching a campaign to represent Senate District 42, currently held by David Adelman.
Adelman was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to become the next U.S. Ambassador to Singapore. If Adelman's confirmed, Carter plans to run for his vacant seat.
Jim Galloway notes that the district Carter hopes to represent which includes Decatur, Chamblee and Stone Mountain is home to a sizable Jewish population. The elder Carter's views on Israel and Palestine have ruffled some feathers in the past, to be sure.
Whether the beliefs of the grandfather will impact the political chances of the grandson is too early (and complex) to call. If an opponent makes it an issue Galloway says 2008 Superior Court Judge candidate Tom Stubbs has expressed interest in running for the same seat Carter will have a chance to state his case.
Carter's launched a website where supporters can sign up for information or get involved. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, he'll host a campaign kickoff at Twain's in downtown Decatur. Kids are invited, he said, as he's bringing his. Festivities start at 6:30 p.m.

Greetings All, We're running out of post it notes over here at the secret underground Libertarian Command Center (LCC) as we try to keep up with the various and sundry announced, thinking about it and unannounced candidates for the impending special election in State Senate District 42. Now we can move Jason Carter from the unannounced dry erase board over to the declared blackboard and put up a note for this Judge Stubbs dude. He's got some company because there's a guy named John Ridley from Decatur also considering running as a democrat. You also have to add in Altaf Galeyev, the republican candidate in 2008 who knew he was gonna get shellacked by David Adelman but still had the stones to run. We're thinking he'll be back. The Libertarians will have a candidate on the ballot for the 42nd special election. Since it's a special election, Georgia's 1943 Jim Crow petition process that has been so successful in keeping third parties from running candidates for the Georgia House and Georgia Senate does not apply. We've also heard that that those zany guys and gals over at the Green Party are thinking about fielding a candidate. So if you've got $400 bucks laying around and you want some political experience for resume enhancement, you should keep up with the news and when Sec State Karen Handle announces the qualifying period is open, head down and join the fun! Vote for Smaller Government, Lower Taxes and More Freedom! Vote Libertarian!
lets hope he is not like his grandfather and he will repudiate his grandfathers hysterical anti-israel and anti-semitic views
only the most hard line, extreme right wing types will think jimmy carter's views are anything but moderate and realistic.
one could also say that only an extreme leftist would see Jimmy Carter as a moderate. Moderates don't validate crooked "elections" of hard left leaders.
Please explain the role of the GA Senate in Middle East politics. Regardless of one's views of Jimmy Carter, let's elect state politicians who have our best interests at heart and who will push good ideas and effective governance.
A persons views and associations instruct us on their intelligence and character. That applies to ANY election. That said, this is JASON Carter, not JIMMY. Kind of a key point. I would never vote for Jimmy, but Jason shouldn't pay for his Grandfathers faults. He is his own man and we should evaluate him on his beliefs.
jason shouldnt pay for his grandfathers sins as long as he acknowledges them and assures us he doesnt believe in them.
