>> While in Oslo accepting the Nobel Prize for Peace, President Obama spent most of his speech defending the "just war" in Afghanistan. Many conservatives praised the speech with a Republican strategist even saying "Bush could have delivered the very same speech." Bush could not have pronounced it correctly, though. (Politico)

>> Forty-four of the world's largest oil companies bid at the Iraq government's public auction today selling the development rights for two of its largest untapped oil fields. The auction winners include a partnership between Royal Dutch Shell and Malaysian Petronas and an association led by China National Petroleum Company. Does this mean we have to invade the Netherlands, Malaysia and China now too? (the New York Times)

>> Jews may be the Chosen People, but some of them are more chosen than others. A "feverish debate" has erupted over the decreased number of guests Obama has invited to his administration's first Hanukkah party. Stop your kvetching! (the New York Times)

>> The European Union pledged 7.2 billion euros, or $10.6 billion, today to aid poorer nations to battle global warming over the next three years. So far the U.S. has made no such pledge, only a nasally whine asking for more bailout money. (AFP)

>> Retails sales rose 1.3 percent more than forecast last month, a potential sign that consumers spending could be gaining speed. Or a potential sign there will be a 1.3 percent increase in after-holiday returns of ugly sweaters. (Bloomberg)
