After he lost the Democratic primary in last year's U.S. Senate race to Jim Martin, former DeKalb County CEO Vernon "Tyrannosaurus" Jones has maintained a relatively low profile.
Earlier this summer, there were mumblings that he'd run for governor. On Dec. 1, he made a quick appearance at Mary Norwood's runoff party at the Varsity. Last week, we received a press release that said Jones would ask the DeKalb County Commission to first offer a chance for public input before it tinkers with the CEO position. We also hear that he's a familiar face at Inman Perk's Inman Park location.
So he's out and about we just don't know his next move.
Well, Insider Advantage's Dick Pettys sends word that a shadowy group of dignitaries today urged the flamboyant politico to run next year for the 4th Congressional District seat currently held by Hank Johnson.
We are told that [Jones] met with more than a dozen folks from DeKalb and Rockdale County Monday in a private home. The group included blacks and whites and was described as representing a cross-section of movers and shakers, including ministers, people with ties to numerous community organizations and folks with access to deep-pocket givers.
Pettys says Jones didn't tell the shadowy group of dignitaries whether he'd run or not, but that he'd have answer after Christmas. Insert joke about Christmas-coming-late-for-Jones-fans-and-journalists riiiiight here.

A shadowy group of dignitaries told me to get another cup of coffee. When a shadowy group of dignitaries tells you to do something, you do it.
Yes I love it when politicians take their direction from shadowy groups. Also how apt is it that there is a Christmas with the Devil and 666 ad on this story. Go forth o' dark Mose
If Vernon decides to run for the seat, he will surley have my vote. I live in Dekalb and have seen what he was able to do for the county during the "Recession". New Sidewalks, Greenspace, roads, as well as being a physical presence in the community. Durring his years as CEO i seen him everywhere, a man of the people.
Mosley I don't think we were living in the same Dekalb County. If my memory serves me correctly, Vernon spent most of his time fighting with the BOC
Ok, haters cut all the crap Vernon did a fabulous job. Stop the hating. Whats wrong with you?????? What would you rather see another George Bush????? I bet so.
Dear Vernon and the posters okmyturn and the mosley: Inquiring minds on this board would like to know between the posters called okmyturn and the mosley which one of you is Keith Hillsman and the other Craig Mr. Kanas City Wright? Is this the best that Vernon can do getting a lobbyist and then the other a felon to come on a message board and post stuff about him?
I am neither. I am just a citizen who can read thru the media hype and see the results of Vernon and his administrations past works in Dekalb County.
And I'm neither. Bottom line...Vernon did a great job for DC and You... so-called(South Dekalb Says) you know it. So come on... fess up, put your cards on the table. What's the Real root to Your evil? I'm also wondering (South Dekalb Says), when you say Inquiring Minds...are you also maybe - wesleywhatwhat and Allison?
Of course Vernon is running - What else is he going to do with himself? Some productive private sector activity? Ha! Small business owners can't spend $250,000 per year on an armed entourage. I think Vernon's only corporate gig was at WorldCom. I'd like to see the file the feds have on this guy...
Vernon has done a wonderful job and we saw the fruits of his labor then and now. You may not like the man but he has the ability to get things done. I'm pretty sure a lot of you would rather see him argue with the BOC than have your property taxes and water bills raised with furloughs and other things falling apart. You can not fault a man for being a leader and making tough necessary choices to benefit the citizens of Dekalb. He has my vote and I'm sure plenty others. Enough to win.
