On Saturday night Mason Murer Fine Art hosts the eleventh annual Art Papers Art Auction a giant art show raising money for Art Papers magazine.
As someone who is increasingly out-of-tune with life in general, and local art in particular, I enjoy the Art Papers auction because it's a chance to see a wide variety great work in one evening. Because the audience at the auction is much larger than at typical openings, I've always had the impression as a viewer that participating artists offer some of their best work for the show. There's more great, interesting art at this auction than there is at any other single show I've gone to in Atlanta.
But the art is only part of why it's such a enjoyable evening. The gallery is usually packed with artists and art-lookers - people who are more-fun-than-average to stop and chit-chat with, or at least eavesdrop on. And because there are silent auctions happening at different times throughout the gallery, the crowd is constantly circulated. It's as if you're spending the evening strolling down an extraordinarily beautiful, climate-controlled street. You take-in the scenery. You people watch. You talk with friends and strangers. And unlike most streets, you can drink without getting ticketed.
